As the church gathers, it is for two purposes: to make much of God through worship and to equip the saints through instruction. Those two objectives are interwoven, and here is how: we often think of worship as what we do when we gather. We pray, read Scripture, sing, there is an exposition of Scripture, etc. But there are two sides to the coin of worship: sensing God and serving Him. So, as we gather to worship God (sense Him) we also gather to be quipped to serve Him, because every believer is in ministry.
So there are generally two sides to the coin of ministry: outreach and discipleship. Every believer is called to live the gospel in the presence of FRAN. As ministers of reconciliation, it is our privilege to introduce people to the loving Creator/Redeemer. Be the light in the presence of those who are yet in the darkness of unbelief and alienation. We can be their bridge to the community of faith.
Discipleship is one life coming along side another to walk together in a Godward direction. It is the other side of the coin of ministry, because part of following Jesus is helping others follow Jesus. You have an important role in the spiritual progress of other believers.
Look around. Whom have you not seen in a while? Who is facing a struggle? Who is new in the faith? Do you know someone who is drifting? It may be stating the obvious, but pastors cannot possibly minister at this level to every individual in the church. This is why every believer is equipped for the work of the ministry.
In today’s environment, it is far too easy to just go to church on Sunday and then be detached from the family of God for the rest of the week. So, since you are in ministry, consider the tools of ministry: a phone, or paper and pen, your dining room, or the coffee shop. Graciously – and with their permission – step into another person’s life to walk with them in a Godward direction. You will find that in reaching out this way, there are two side to the coin: mutual benefit, and God’s glory.
